Kirsten Barron Kinney<\/strong>\u202fgraduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine in 1997, where she double majored, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Choreography and in Dance Performance. While attending UCI, she was a member of Donald McKayle\u2019s modern company\u202fEtude Ensemble<\/em>, a soloist with the\u202fFresno Ballet<\/em>\u202funder the direction of Donald Bradburn and has returned to UCI as a guest choreographer for Bare Bones Dance Theatre and as a guest performer for the Donald McKayle\u2019s Tribute.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirsten moved to Seattle, where she has focused on dance education, earned a Pilates certification, and freelanced as a dancer and choreographer. Kirsten has directed youth programs, worked with many local and national dance schools and organizations such as Gotta Dance, Westlake Dance Center, Cornish Summer Prep Program, Dance Masters of America<\/em>, and has been involved in many of\u202fSeattle Theatre Group\u2019s Education and Community Engagement<\/em>\u202fprograms. Kirsten performed and choreographed for the band\u202fQueensr\u00ffche<\/em>,\u202fEn L\u2019air Dance<\/em>,\u202fWestlake Dance Center, Physical Poetry, and\u202f<\/em>Lions Club International. Kirsten is a former coach for the\u202fShorecrest Hip Hop Team<\/em> and co-produced\u202fSC Hip Hop presents Physical Poetry\u202f<\/em>with her husband, Rex Kinney.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirsten became involved with\u202fSeattle Theatre Group<\/em>\u202fover 15 years ago as a teaching artist for\u202fSTG\u2019s DANCE This Intensive<\/em>. Since then, she has been a part of the faculty for the\u202fDANCE This Camp<\/em>,\u202fDance for PD\u00ae<\/em>,\u202fBroadway Inclusion Program<\/em>, and\u202fDisney Musicals in Schools\u00ae.\u202f<\/em>\u202fShe was also the\u202f<\/em>Finale choreographer for\u202fDANCE This Performance<\/em>,\u202fDANCE This at Folklife<\/em>, Finale choreographer and featured choreographer for\u202fGlobal Party<\/em>, rehearsal director the commission of Donald McKayle\u2019s piece\u202fShaker Life<\/em>\u202ffrom\u202fSongs of the Disinherited (1972), <\/em>Adam Parson\u2019s piece\u202fFlock (2022), and a <\/em>piece from the Tony-award winning musical The Outsiders (2026)<\/em>. Kirsten has produced and provided the artistic direction for\u202fSTG\u2019s<\/em>\u202fDANCE This Performance<\/em>\u202fwhich includes national guest commissions by Chlo\u00e9 Arnold of\u202fSyncopated Ladies,\u202f<\/em>Robert Garland of\u202fDance Theatre of Harlem,\u202f<\/em>Aaron Gordon former cast member of\u202fHamilton, Jamel Gains Creative Outlet<\/em>\u202fof Brooklyn, New York, and Camille A. Brown choreographer of the hit Broadway musical Hell\u2019s Kitchen.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirsten embraces a holistic approach to dance education and is passionate about teaching dancers to understand dance technique, body mechanics, and dance history while embracing their own artistry. She incorporates improvisation, choreography, a plethora of somatic practices, and historical research, and relies on dance as a common denominator to bring people together. Kirsten loves to remain a student always\u2026she is inspired by all kinds of dance from all cultures, by her students of all ages and abilities, and loves sharing her experience and knowledge of the art of dance with others. Above all, she always values remaining a student.
