{"id":1413,"date":"2021-09-30T19:14:10","date_gmt":"2021-10-01T02:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/titleix\/?page_id=1413"},"modified":"2025-07-21T13:03:59","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T20:03:59","slug":"tips-for-supportive-response","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/titleix\/tips-for-supportive-response\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for Supportive Response"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If someone&nbsp;tells you they have experienced sex- or gender-based harassment, sexual assault, stalking, intimate partner violence, or other sex\/gender related discrimination &#8211; know that you might be the first person they have told. How you respond can significantly impact that person&#8217;s next steps.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specific Tips on How to Respond<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Listen<\/em><\/strong> to what they share without interrupting.<br>Thank them for feeling safe enough to share with you. Don&#8217;t push them to share more, let the person share what they choose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Validate <\/strong>their experience.<br>It is okay to tell the person that you are sorry for what they experienced. Avoid asking &#8220;why&#8221; questions or telling them how you would have handled it or how they should have responded.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inform<\/strong> them of your responsibilities.<br>Let the person making the disclosure know of your obligation to report to Title IX and that they should expect outreach within a day or two to explain options and supportive measures. Be sure to tell them that a report does not initiate an investigation or other action.<br><strong>*<\/strong>If a student&nbsp;<strong><em>appears under 18, <\/em><\/strong>explain that you are a mandatory reporter of child abuse and neglect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Refer <\/strong>to resources.<br>You can provide options and offer support, but it is important that the person decide for themselves how they want to proceed. You can ask, &#8220;How can I support you?&#8221; and\/or offer to accompany them to support resources, e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/counseling\/\">Counseling Center<\/a> and Title IX. Off campus resource information is available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/gbvprevention\/resources\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/gbvprevention\/resources\/\">Gender Based Violence Prevention<\/a> website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-panel card bg-secondary text-white\"><div class=\"card-body\">\n<p><strong><em>Do not investigate<\/em><\/strong>. Employees should not attempt to investigate the incident by gathering more information or asking for details.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Considerations for faculty and aria-controls=\"collapse_e31f99a7-c9d6-4ec2-a986-6b908e62ddb8\">Establish Expectations and Interrupt<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"collapse_e31f99a7-c9d6-4ec2-a986-6b908e62ddb8\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_e31f99a7-c9d6-4ec2-a986-6b908e62ddb8\" data-parent=\"#accordion_0b95a8aa-90fe-4650-acae-c2581c64653b\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_0b95a8aa-90fe-4650-acae-c2581c64653b\"><div class=\"card-body\">\n<p>Establish class engagement and workplace expectations up-front:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-fcc22c03-34cd-4680-ab7f-cbca78944bc7\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>in your syllabus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>during orientation or team meetings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in class&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Interrupt proactively and address:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>problems,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>comments,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>language use, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>behaviors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-primary text-bg-primary\n\t\t text-white\"><div expected to communicate or meet outside of the class or work location:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>remind them to meet in a public location vs. a private location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>encourage students to communicate with their BC email vs. their personal email<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ensure that you are listed as an administrator on any non-BC platforms that you have suggested or approved for use&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-primary text-bg-primary\n\t\t text-white\"><div
