Spring 2022 Faculty and Staff Wellness & Fitness Schedule

No experience is required and no need to sign up in advance. Join us for a class to improve your health and personal productivity.

The Wellness Center- Faculty and Staff Fitness events are co-promoted by the Faculty Commons.  Additional classes and workshop are available to BC Faculty at the Faculty Commons.

The weekly fitness classes below are funded by Human Resources and the BC Wellness Center. No registration required, show up, sign in and enjoy! Then invite a friend to join you for the next class.

Faculty & Staff Fitness Center Access

Faculty and Staff may access the Fitness Center by signing up for Open Access through the Student Business Center.  For $30.50, you can use the Fitness Center when PE classes are not being held. New equipment and locker rooms included. Sign up today!


Xpress Fitness with Michelle 

Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30-8:10 AM, G-111 Fitness Center (Zoom available) 

April 19 – June 16 ( no class 4/21 or 5/24)

Join BC Fitness Center Instructor Michelle for this 40-minute group training session. Participants will meet at the BC Fitness Center for a regularly scheduled workout hosted by Michelle. You will work through various body weight and simple equipment exercises. No equipment is required, except workout attire and a water bottle. 
 
If you cannot join us in person, you may join on Zoom. Here are some supplies that would be useful for our class: a chair that can help you balance, small weights or household items such as filled water bottles or cans of food that give weight challenge, resistance bands for legs, stretch cords for upper body, mat for floor work, non-slip socks or shoes. It would be helpful to have supplies ready to go at the start of our sessions.

Monday Yoga 

Mondays, 1:30-2:30 PM,  April 18-June 15 (G110 Fitness Studio- no class 5/31) 

A full hour of Guided Yoga with Sally Smith. Sally sees Yoga as an opportunity to Work-In, meaningful focus on your body and breath connection. Great for personal wellness and community engagement. No experience required! Class is instructed for all ability levels with modifications provided to help you move within your limits.

De-Stress Yoga Meditation 

Wednesdays 1:30-2:00 PM, April 20-June 15 (G110 Fitness Studio- no class 5/11)  

Join Penelope Benis for a half hour of yoga geared toward shedding the stress of the work day and re-energized for the afternoon.Class is instructed for all ability levels with modification provided to help you move within your limits.

A Simple Introduction To Mindfulness

Thursdays, May 19-June 9, 2:30-4:00 PM, Via Zoom

This four-week course will introduce the practical, time-tested tools and foundations of mindfulness meditation through brief talks and experiential, guided meditation. Mindfulness practice is reported, both personally and scientifically, to offer a range of benefits. It can support, soothe, vitalize, or ground present-moment experience in a helpful, nourishing way. Learning will be supported in a cumulative fashion, so it is strongly recommended to attend all sessions.

Healthy Boundaries for Effective Interactions

Tuesdays: April 19 & 26, May 3 2:30 – 4:00 PM

As we return to the campus, classroom, and other meeting spaces, we are all learning/re-learning how to connect with each other. We may be experiencing discomfort in the thought of how to establish healthy boundaries with our students to create safe learning spaces for everyone. Master Jason Mix from Enso Center in Redmond will facilitate this 3-session workshop in which faculty and staff are invited to learn techniques to keep themselves and others safe, comfortable, and connected as the campus reopens and we come back to face-to-face instruction. Participants will learn and practice proven effective techniques, based in cultural and personal proxemics.

The three-session workshop will cover:

1. How to identify personal space and boundaries and use them to create healthy connections.

2. How to identify and use the options created by healthy boundaries for physical and emotional health and effectiveness.

3. How to expand our connections and enhance our effectiveness and safety in a group setting.

All three sessions will provide participants with the opportunity to ask questions, problem-solve scenarios, and shape the focus of future sessions. As the purpose of this workshop is to practice being back on campus, we are running this as a face-to-face offering, with a remote-in option. Personal Training: Private 1 on 1

Spring into the term with a personalized fitness plan and one-on-one guidance by a BC intern. Faculty and staff can access interns for a tailored, customized, and safe strength-training plan that addresses their overall movement or strength goals. Creating a plan you can use at home or in a fitness center, there is no prior fitness experience required. Times can also be booked for fitness center tours or equipment ‘how-To’s”- if you have always wanted to learn how to use a machine, weights, or cardio equipment!

Introduction to Strength Training: Small Group Class

Wednesdays, 9:30-10:20 AM, May 18-June 8

This four-week course will introduce participants the foundations of strength training in safe and supportive environment. Personal Fitness Training interns will plan, guide, and motivate participants through various workout designs; circuits, cardio-intervals, and overall strength training. Full body, core, and cool down will be included, as well as on the spot modifications as needed. Dumbbells, bands, cable machines, medicine balls and other fun modalities will be used to provide a challenging and fun workout for everybody and all levels! No experience required.

Strategies for Sitting: Stay Comfortable and Calm while Teaching Online

Are you finding your body aching when working long hours behind a computer? Take some time for yourself to learn strategies for sitting to keep your eyes, neck, back, shoulders, and wrists comfortable. Irene will guide us in ways to reduce and relieve the stress of online teaching and prevent over-use injuries and tension. We’ll use the Feldenkrais Method, a powerful learning tool for changing habits.

Around the world, we find ourselves facing global epidemics of obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and other predominantly diet-related diseases. To address these public health crises, we urgently need to explore innovative strategies for promoting healthful eating. There is strong evidence that global increases in the consumption of heavily processed foods, coupled with cultural shifts away from the preparation of food in the home, have contributed to high rates of preventable, chronic disease.
