In general, one year of high school Spanish is equivalent to one quarter of college Spanish. Engel Szwaja-Franken<\/a>, je.szwaja@bellevuecollege.edu)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that message, please communicate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How much Spanish you\u2019ve had.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How long it\u2019s been since you had a Spanish class.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we can begin a discussion about the best placement for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-bc-orange-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Spanish in the United States<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People in the United States have good reasons to learn Spanish considering the close ties with neighboring countries and the large Spanish-speaking communities in the United States. About 40 million people in the United States speak Spanish, and 60 million are identified as Hispanic and Latino on the 2020 census.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-circle-mask\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Different terms are used to describe people in the United States with roots in Latin America. Most people have a stronger attachment to their or their family\u2019s country or place of origin than to terms like Hispanic or Latino and Latina, so terms such as Mexican-American, Puerto Rican, Salvadoran-American, Cuban-American, Dominican-American and so on are common. More recently, the gender-inclusive term Latinx has become common. It is gaining popularity in U.S. colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"290\" height=\"174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2013\/07\/Spain.png\" alt=\"Tower in Spain\" class=\"wp-image-467 size-full img-fluid \" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-bc-orange-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">\u00bfEspa\u00f1ol or Castellano?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Spanish, both \u201cespa\u00f1ol\u201d and \u201ccastellano\u201d are synonyms for the same language (and we don\u2019t capitalize languages in Spanish!) \u201cCastellano\u201d comes from Castile, the old medieval kingdom in northern Spain where the language originated. Once Castile and its language became dominant in the rest of Spain, people started to refer to the language as Spanish. You will hear \u201ccastellano\u201d used in Spain in part out of respect for other official languages spoken alongside Spanish in several regions. You will also hear \u201ccastellano\u201d used in many South American countries. In the U.S. however, \u201cespa\u00f1ol\u201d is the dominant term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-bc-orange-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Myths<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the widely spread \u201cmyths\u201d about Spanish is that it\u2019s an \u201ceasy\u201d language to learn. No language is \u201ceasy\u201d. All require time and patience to learn, as well as will and dedication to master. It is important to enjoy the process as much as possible and speak without fear, so the next time someone asks you: \u201c\u00bfHabla espa\u00f1ol?\u201d, you can proudly reply: \u201cS\u00ed, hablo espa\u00f1ol\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Class Descriptions<\/h3>\n\n\n<h3><strong>SPAN&#038; 121:<\/strong> Spanish I <span class='badge text-bg-secondary badge-secondary'>5 <abbr title=\"credits\">cr<\/abbr>.<\/span><\/h3><p>Introduces the fundamentals of vocabulary and grammar at the novice level\u00a0focusing on the development of four basic skills: Listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis is placed on active communication aimed at the development of oral and comprehension skills. Various aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures are presented. Format includes extensive audio and Internet usage. After successful completion, students are encouraged to continue with\u00a0SPAN&#038; 122. This class is not intended for heritage speakers\u00a0(i.e. students who grew up speaking Spanish at home in a place where Spanish is not the medium of instruction in schools) or native\u00a0speakers (i.e. students who grew up\u00a0in a place where Spanish is\u00a0the medium of instruction in schools).\u00a0Please refer to &#8220;Spanish for Heritage Speakers&#8221; SPAN 231\u00a0if you grew up speaking Spanish without ever having had formal instruction.
