is a 1-hour facilitated workshop which engaged learners to consider their own identity, self-awareness, and how they may be perceived in online and virtual environments, including virtual worlds, social VR platforms, and other immersive spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you already have experience with this tool, or designing avatars, please go ahead and begin creating; this is time for you to experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suggest that all persons rush through their first avatar as they are editable after-the-fact and get at least one avatar completed enough to share (between 5-10 minutes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Instructions to create Ready Player Me account and begin constructing your avatar:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Create account at <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/readyplayer.me\/\"><strong>https:\/\/readyplayer.me\/<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Click \u201cSign up\u201d button, select \u201cPlayer\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enter email, and create password<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verify account link in your email<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This workshop will cover some basic definitions and context relevant to XR and immersive environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-reflection of identity and personal representation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We will cover the use of one avatar creation tool which has application across several immersive VR platforms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Why and how to consider your virtual representation-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identity factors- Where do we display our \u201cidentity\u201d?:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, Name, Title, Education, Email address, Visual presentation, Slang, Accent, Dialect, and Association, are all \u201cSpeech Codes\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speech codes: theorized by Gerry Philipsen, Professor Emeritus at UW<ul><li>\u201cSpeech Codes\u201d, which is Philipsen\u2019s reframing \u2018The Ethnography of communication\u2019<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>essentially, this encapsulates the relationship between communication and culture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Impression management: Erving Goffman \u2013 \u2018Give\u2019 vs. \u2018Give off\u2019 via \u2018Impression Management\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Instructions to begin creating your avatar:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on the tile that says \u201cCreate a New Avatar\u201d or \u201cTry our Avatar Creator\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OPTIONAL: Take a front-facing photo with your webcam or upload a file from your computer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OPTIONAL: Start from a pre-created template<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose a heteronormative gender expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose a body type<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose a skin color<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose a head shape \/ jaw line<ol><li>Eyes (Shape and color)<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>Eyebrows (Shape and color)<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>Nose shape<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>Mouth shape<\/li><\/ol>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Facial hair and color<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose a Hairstyle and hair color (use horizontal scrollbar to see more styles)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose an outfit template, or select Tops, Bottoms, Shoes independently<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose Eyewear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose Makeup<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose Mask or face-covering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose Headwear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select teal-colored box \u201cNext -&gt;\u201d to set your main identity<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>From the Ready Player Me \u201cHub\u201d menu [ <a href=\"https:\/\/readyplayer.me\/hub\">https:\/\/readyplayer.me\/hub<\/a> ] you can further customize your look, create a new avatar style, or download a copy of your avatar as .glb format to use in 3D modeling programs, and\/or convert it to an .stl (Standard Triangle Language) to print your avatar with a 3D printer!<br>Free GLB to STL converter: [ <a href=\"https:\/\/convert3d.org\/glb-to-stl\">https:\/\/convert3d.org\/glb-to-stl<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This brief workshop was delivered to faculty members at Connected learning's Summer Institute!\"Identity, Your Avatar, and You!\" is a 1-hour facilitated workshop which engaged learners to consider their own identity, self-awareness, and how they may be perceived in online and virtual environments, including virtual worlds, social VR platforms, and other immersive spaces.
