Kelsey Creek Road Bus Lane Changes

-Kelsey Creek Road received a few design adjustments this past month. These changes emerged from conversations with King County Metro in Summer 2014. When Metro proposed cutting several routes from the College campus, Metro and the College struck a deal on design adjustments that would improve service and safety. In the end, these changes helped keep the bus on campus!
-The goal of the changes were to 1) improve pedestrian safety and 2) prevent temporary car parking in bus lanes. It is common for cars to park in bus lanes, thus delaying bus traffic and causing back-ups.
The primary physical change is “channelization” of buses, which delineates car traffic from bus traffic and directs pedestrians to use crosswalks. The project was completed May 22, 2015.
-It’s important to note that students ensured that the Metro buses continued coming to campus. Student leaders and transit riders made their voice loud and clear – don’t take buses off campus. It was this power that made sure Metro came to the table, open to negotiate ways of improving service while keeping buses on campus.
Students made this happen!
