Want Light Rail to Campus? Tell Sound Transit!

This is a picture that says Where do you want to go next? There are three people in the picture: a white man, a black woman, and young girl. The man is holding a sign that says take the survey through July 8

Traffic to campus is bad. Students spend countless hours on the freeways. Balancing work, life, and family becomes increasingly difficult. But for our growing cities, there’s no end in sight. By 2040, Bellevue is projected to grow 33%. This is a problem, and students need answers.

Tired of traffic? Want to see more transit on the Eastside? See the Sound Transit 3 Survey, and tell Sound Transit that Bellevue College students matter!

The Eastside is one of the fastest growing areas of Washington State, and Bellevue College is serving an ever-growing population of students. Students deserve a system that facilitates access to education. In support of future access, Sound Transit has opened a comment period for its future projects. This brief survey asks participants to share which projects are the most important. Students can comment on any project, but the ones that affect them are on the second page. See the photo below.

This picture is segment of the Sound Transit three survey. There are three projects listed on the survey. Overlake Transit Center (light rail), Totem Lake to Issaquah via Bellevue (light rail), and Renton HOV Direct Access Ramp at N 8th. Survey participants can rate each project as 1 to 5 on a scale of importance, or they can have no opinion.

One project stands out as being the most important for students: Totem Lake to Issaquah via Bellevue. The survey question for this project can be found on the second page.

Sound Transit 3 is a funding package that will go to the state-wide ballot in 2016. Should the ballot measure pass, $15 billion could be levied for long-term transportation investment in the region.

The importance of improved travel options is clear: the region’s population is exploding, and our transportation system has not kept pace. The Sound Transit 3 website expounds on this importance, but some highlights include:

  1. One million in population growth by 2040 in the region;
  2. Light rail can move 1200 people per hour in high traffic areas, while cares move about 700;
  3. Drive times have increased dramatically in recent years, with greater delays expected.

Let’s face it, traffic stinks. Here’s your chance to make it better. Tell Sound Transit what Bellevue College students need at the Sound Transit 3 Survey Site.
