What is Achieving the Dream?

Overview of ATD

Achieving the Dream (ATD) is a national nonprofit organization and network of colleges dedicated to improving student success and advancing equity in higher education. ATD works with community colleges across the country to help them use data, evidence-based practices, and institutional learning to remove barriers and improve outcomes for all students.

Bellevue College joined Achieving the Dream to strengthen its commitment to equitable student success and to ensure that institutional decisions, programs, and support systems are intentionally designed to help students persist, complete their programs, and achieve their academic and career goals.

More Information

Achieving the Dream focuses on long-term, institutional change rather than short-term or isolated initiatives. Colleges work within a structured framework that examines how policies, practices, and systems shape the student experience from entry through completion.

Through ATD, institutions engage in ongoing assessment, reflection, and improvement to ensure that student success efforts are aligned, sustainable, and responsive to student needs.

A core principle of Achieving the Dream is the use of disaggregated data to understand how different groups of students experience college. This approach helps institutions identify barriers that disproportionately affect historically marginalized and underrepresented students.

By using evidence to guide decisions, colleges can focus improvement efforts where they are most needed and ensure that equity is embedded in institutional planning and practice.

The DREAM Conference is Achieving the Dream’s annual national convening, bringing together community college leaders, faculty, staff, and partners from across the country to share evidence-based strategies for advancing student success and equity.

The conference focuses on using data to inform institutional decision-making, strengthening teaching and learning practices, and scaling initiatives that improve outcomes—particularly for students who have been historically underserved. Sessions highlight promising practices, institutional transformation efforts, and opportunities for cross-college learning and collaboration.

Bellevue College will have faculty and staff representation at the DREAM Conference in 2026, participating in sessions and conversations that support the College’s ongoing Achieving the Dream work. Participation in the conference helps inform Bellevue College’s continued efforts to improve student experiences and outcomes through coordinated, equity-focused institutional change.

At Bellevue College, Achieving the Dream is not a standalone program or office. Instead, it serves as a guiding framework that helps align student success work across academic and student support areas.

ATD principles inform initiatives such as equitable placement practices, coordinated early academic intervention, pathways exploration, culturally responsive teaching, and advising redesign. This integrated approach ensures that student success efforts are connected, intentional, and focused on long-term impact.
