Networking & Job Fair Tips

  • Pre-register for the Job Fair to save time at check-in.
  • Update your resume. Our Career Specialists can help with this.
  • Research the organizations attending the Job Fair.
  • For organizations that interest you, prepare to explain why you want to work there and any questions you have.
  • Decide what you’re going to wear. Dress professionally such that the focus remains on you, not on what you’re wearing.
  • Practice introducing yourself with your name, academic and career goals, and any examples of how you’re working toward those goals.
  • Print hard copies of your resume to bring. If you have a professional portfolio, you can include its link on your resume or bring it with you.

  • When you arrive, check in at the desk where you will receive a copy of the event map.
  • Walk through the room and introduce yourself to representatives at organizations that interest you. Ask the representatives any questions you have and engage in conversation.
  • Ask for a business card from each representative you speak with to collect their contact information.
  • Avoid distractions when talking with the representatives. This includes turning your cell phone ringer off and not chewing gum.
  • You can navigate the Job Fair at your own pace and step out of the main room to get your resume reviewed, take a professional headshot, or take a break.

  • Send a follow-up email to each representative who you connected with. In this email, you can thank them for their time, attach a digital copy of your resume, and/or ask any additional questions you have.
  • Consider your next career steps such as applying to a job or internship, or connecting with the representatives you met on LinkedIn. Feel free to meet with a Career Specialist for support.
