Cybersecurity Workshop [90 minutes]

Facilitator: David Mattson

I began hacking with video games when I was young, mostly MSDOS games and the early online games.  Throughout most of my life I thought this was just a nerdy hobby without much of a job market.  Eventually my understanding of this changed and I pursued a masters degree, specializing in machine learning, once again because ML was a nerdy hobby of mine.  Along the way I received the grand prize in a capture-the-flag event hosted by SANS and started pursuing offensive security as a career.  For the last 5 years I have also been moonlighting as an instructor of offensive security courses at both private and public institutions while keeping my day job at a large software corporation as a senior penetration tester.  I am a strong believer in the gamification of instruction, and that concepts are best taught hands-on in an applied environment in a way that is both enjoyable and accessible to students of all backgrounds and interests.

Workshop Overview:

  • Introduction to Cybersecurity and importance in K-12 education
  • Real-world examples of the topic in action
  • Hands-on Activity: Ethical Hacking
  • Guidance for incorporating cybersecurity into classroom
  • Resources for Teachers
