Bellevue College Emergency Management provides the equipment that is needed to establish communication with trained responders, assist with evacuations, provide first aid care, and maintain safety and security until trained assistance arrives. Becoming familiar with the equipment available and its location will be critical in an emergency.
Types of Equipment
AEDS(Automated External Defibrillators)
AEDS are portable, life saving devices designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, a medical condition in which the heart stops beating suddenly and unexpectedly. These devices are in wall mounted-cases in various locations in each building.
What is an AED used for?
An AED is used during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
What to Do?
To use:
- Open AED
- Apply adult or pediatric electrode pads
- Follow voice prompt as directed
Crisis Response Boxes
The blue Crisis Response boxes are located near each campus building, including the parking garage. Each box is equipped with basic emergency preparedness supplies, including emergency food and water. The purpose of these boxes is to provide emergency assistance and support in an emergency situation that may require evacuees to shelter in place. These boxes are accessible by the safety leads assigned to each building and public safety officers.
Evacuation Chairs
Stryker Evacuation Chairs are used to bring a wheelchair-bound person down a stairwell. They are located near stairwell areas.
Fire Alarm Pull Station
Fire alarm pull stations are located in multiple locations within every campus building. These devices should be pulled when fire and/or smoke is observed. When pulled, the pull-station will trigger the fire alarm alerting the need for evacuating the building and fire response protocols will be followed.
Fire Extinguishers Fire extinguishers are located in multiple locations within each campus building. Monthly visual checks and annual fire extinguisher inspections are conducted to ensure that the extinguishers are fully functional in case of an emergency. The fire extinguishers have readout dials, the indicator arrow on the readout dial is to be within the green zone. If the indicator arrow is on either side of the green zone, contact Public Safety to have the fire extinguisher replaced. The use of fire extinguishers is for minor fire situations, if the fire is too big and/or cannot be put out with a fie extinguisher, pull a Fire Alarm pull station and evacuate immediately. Any fire extinguisher that has been used at all, even if it wasn’t fully discharged, needs to be reported to Public Safety so a replacement fire extinguisher can be provided.
First Aid Kits
First Aid kits are located in office areas and near classrooms within each campus building. These kits provide basic minor first aid care for minor cuts and burns. Major injuries will require professional medical care.
Emergency Phones
There are various types of emergency phones located throughout campus. Emergency phones include the blue call boxes located in the parking lots and various courtesy phones located near campus buildings. These phones will call Public Safety directly, allowing the caller immediate access to assistance.
