BAS Capstone vs. Experiential Learning Internship

As a part of the BAS Software Development program, all students will complete one of these required senior course options:

-Two-quarter final Capstone classes (DEV 490 and DEV 491), OR

-500 hours of approved internship(s), plus concurrent enrollment in required internship classes, EXPRL 490 and EXPRL 491. Students must find internships on their own.

Capstone

BAS Software Development students who choose the Capstone option will register for the following courses in their final Winter and Spring quarters:

  • DEV 490 Capstone I (Winter)
  • DEV 491 Capstone II (Spring)

In Capstone, the instructor connects student teams to real business clients. Each team will work for two consecutive quarters to complete a full technical project for the client from start to finish. Capstone courses have a weekly attendance requirement to ensure the project is progressing and successfully meeting the client’s project goals. Students are expected to maintain professional communication with their team members and their client, to manage project timelines and deliverables, and to complete their project by the end of the Spring term.

Upon completion of Capstone, students present their work in a final Capstone Showcase to the Bellevue College community.

Capstone provides a great opportunity for students to develop a portfolio that can be highlighted on their resume as hands-on experience.

Experiential Learning (EXPRL Courses + Internships)

If BAS Software Development students find an internship in their area of study that meets the qualifications and rigor required for an upper-division experiential learning, with Program Chair approval, the following two courses can be taken instead of the 10-credit Capstone requirement:

  • EXPRL 490 Internship Experience I (5 credits)
  • EXPRL 491 Internship Experience II (5 credits)

EXPRL courses must be taken while you are completing your internship(s). We will not accept past internships for credit. The internship must be approved by the Program Chair prior to registering for the EXPRL classes. In addition to completing a total of 500 internship hours, students will be complete required EXPRL coursework which include documenting and reflecting upon their internship experience in order to connect their learning to a real-world environment. EXPRL students will be advised by a faculty member and coached by an internship coordinator.
