Inclusive Crosswalks to be Painted on Campus

The LGBTQ Task Force at Bellevue College is working closely with the LGBTQ Resource Center advocating for staff, students and faculty that might experience discrimination because of gender identity or expression. Each year, events are held providing education to the BC community on LGBTQ history and issues and to celebrate LGBTQ culture. Major events include National Coming Out Day on October 11, Trans Day of Remembrance on November 20 and Pride month in June.

This year the LGBTQ Task Force along with the LGBTQ Resource Center is raising money to place new crosswalks on campus. The crosswalks will be painted with the black and brown rainbow and one with the transgender flag.

Crosswalks are a symbol of a safe crossing of a potentially dangerous road or a bridge over a dangerous divide. In the LGBTQ community, not everyone is readily identified or recognized and the community continues to face hate speech and crimes further marginalizing the community. The crosswalks will act as a symbol of safety for LGBTQ students and employees at Bellevue College, bringing visibility to the populations of LGBTQ people that are part of our community.
