BigBlueButton

BigBlueButton (BBB) is an open-source web conferencing system built specifically for online learning, offering features like multi-user whiteboards, breakout rooms, and shared notes. It integrates natively with Canvas, providing real-time collaboration without downloads, and includes tools for polling, attendance tracking, and auto-recording. BBB prioritizes simplicity and privacy, making it a reliable choice for interactive, student-centered sessions.

With BigBlueButton, students can join live sessions and access recordings directly inside Canvas—no extra steps required! Unlike Zoom or Google Meet, faculty don’t need to download, upload, or manually link recordings. BigBlueButton automatically saves and embeds session recordings in the course space, making it effortless for instructors and convenient for learners.

What You Can Do With It

For Bellevue College’s remote-heavy courses, BigBlueButton supports dynamic, participatory teaching that keeps students actively involved. Its Canvas embedding ensures a frictionless experience.

Deliver Interactive Lectures

Share slides and annotate live on a shared whiteboard during presentations.

Manage Group Work

Assign students to breakout rooms with timers and private chats for focused collaboration.

Track Engagement

Use polls, emojis, and attendance logs to monitor participation and adjust on the fly.

Record for Review

Automatically save sessions with chat transcripts for students to revisit key discussions.

In Canvas, enable BigBlueButton via Settings > Navigation > BigBlueButton select Enable by clicking on the three dots. Then go to the bottom of the page and select Save. Once the tool is enabled in your course, you will see BigBlueButton in your course navigation. Select it to add your first Conference.
