Course Reserve Guidelines

Purpose

Faculty may place BC library materials or personal items such as books and copies of articles for their students on reserve as long as they are compliant with Fair Use Guidelines. Reserve items are located at the Library Circulation desk and are available to students to check out for short periods of time. Instructors determine the length of check-out time. 

Placing Items on Reserve

To place an item on reserve, fill out the course reserve form.


Loan Periods

Items can be borrowed for any of the following loan periods:

  • 2 Hours, In Library Use Only 
  • 2 Hours 
  • 3 Hours 
  • Overnight 
  • 2 Days 
  • 3 Days 

Copyright and Fair Use

The information below is provided to aid instructors in understanding how to appropriately use course reserves in accordance with copyright law. However, instructors are responsible for evaluating whether their use of materials complies with copyright law. The library places items on course reserve with the understanding that instructors have determined that doing so qualifies as fair use, has been permitted by the copyright owner, or is otherwise in compliance with copyright law.  

The library may refuse to place materials on reserve or remove materials from reserve on account of copyright or other legal or administrative concerns. 


Types of Materials Allowed on Reserve

The following items are generally able to be placed on reserve:

  • Items from BC Library’s collection (books, periodicals, video, etc.) 
  • Items from an instructor’s personal collection (books, periodicals, video, models/teaching aids, etc.) that have been lawfully obtained 
  • Syllabi, class notes, sample tests, and homework solutions authored by the instructor of the course
  • Up to five photocopies of a: book chapter, periodical article, one short story, essay or short poem, or one chart, graph, diagram, cartoon or picture from a single work

The following items are generally not able to be placed on reserve:

  • Items owned by another library
  • Library reference materials
  • Course packets, course readers, lab manuals, and/or other collected materials
  • Papers, test answers, or other work authored by students unless accompanied by written permission form waiving applicable (FERPA) privacy rights

End of Quarter Procedures

Course reserve items are removed from library shelves at the end of each academic quarter. They are then returned to their owners via campus mail. 

If you are using an item for the same course for two consecutive quarters, please note this on the course reserve submission form and we will process it for continued use.
