Finding Purpose and Building Confidence Through Internships at OLS

In the last two quarters of the OLS program, students complete a 250+ hour internship in the career field of their choice.

At OLS Bellevue College, we believe that every student deserves the chance to discover their strengths, explore their passions, and prepare for a meaningful future. For many of our students, the internship experience represents one of the most transformative moments of their college journey. It is the point when classroom learning meets real-world opportunity, and personal growth comes to life.

Through hands-on internships, career readiness courses, and individualized coaching, OLS students develop the confidence, professional skills, and sense of purpose they need to take that next big step toward independence.

A Pivotal Step Toward Independence

For students with learning differences, stepping into the workforce for the first time can feel exciting and empowering—and also unfamiliar. That is why internships at OLS are intentionally designed to meet each student where they are, supporting them through exploration, skill development, and reflection.

Our internship placement is personalized to match the student’s goals and interests. Some students thrive in educational environments, assisting teachers in classrooms or tutoring young learners. Others gain experience in offices, museums, senior centers, technology labs, and many other work settings.

No matter where they work, they learn how to collaborate, communicate, and take initiative in a professional setting. These experiences help students discover what kind of work feels meaningful to them while building the self-assurance that comes from contributing their talents to the community.

How OLS Prepares Students for Success

At OLS, preparation is everything. Our curriculum and coaching approach are designed to ensure students feel confident and supported as they enter the workforce. Here’s some of the ways our program and internships help students succeed.

Developing essential workplace skills

Before beginning their internship, students take classes that focus on communication, teamwork, dependability, time management, and self-advocacy. They practice what it means to be on time, stay organized, and maintain a positive attitude at work while learning how to express their needs and celebrate their progress.

Exploring passions and possibilities

Discovering purpose begins with curiosity. OLS helps students identify their interests, explore potential career paths, and recognize the strengths that make them unique. Through guided self-assessments, class discussions, and mentoring, students learn how to align their talents and passions with meaningful work opportunities.

Building real-world experience

Every OLS student completes a 250+ hour internship during their final year. These internships are customized to each student’s goals and provide authentic, hands-on experience in the field. Students work alongside professionals, gain confidence in their abilities, and begin to see themselves as capable, valued members of a team.

Reflecting, learning, and growing

Growth happens through both success and challenge. During their internship, students participate in weekly Field Experience classes where they reflect on their progress, share what they are learning, and set new goals. Instructors, staff, and mentors provide consistent feedback and encouragement, helping students connect their internship experiences to their long-term career and life plans.

A Time of Growth and Transformation

Internships are often the moment when students realize just how capable they truly are. They begin to see themselves as professionals who can contribute, adapt, and thrive in new environments. Many students finish their internships with a clear sense of direction, new friendships, stronger self-advocacy skills, and a deeper understanding of what kind of work makes them feel fulfilled.

The transformation that takes place during this time is remarkable. Students who once doubted themselves often emerge with confidence, resilience, and a belief in their ability to achieve their goals. They are not only workforce-ready, they are life-ready.
