Bellevue College men’s basketball went 1-2 at the Pierce Thanksgiving Tourney this past weekend. Freshman Yonathan Michael (Shorewood HS, Seattle) was selected to the all-tourney team for his consistent play in all three games. His lights-out shooting on Saturday was one of the highlights of the tourney as Michael was electric offensively, pouring in 30 points and making 6 of 7 from three point range.

In the opening round on Friday November 27, Bellevue defeated Linn-Benton (OR) 84-69. The Bulldogs had a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures. Freshman Jordan Muir-Kueng was efficient everywhere, making 5 of 6 from the field including 4 of 5 from three point land.  Brian Zehr, Bellevue lone returner who had significant playing time last year, had 14 as well.

In the semi-final on Saturday November 28, Bellevue lost to North Region rival Whatcom 82-77. Bellevue got into a hole early, down by 11 at halftime. Early foul trouble by the Bulldogs enabled Whatcom 17 attempts from the free throw line as they capitalized, making 16 of them in the first half.

On Sunday November 29, Bellevue was defeated by Columbia Basin 66-63. The Bulldogs took a two-point lead into the locker room but could not keep the momentum in the second half as the loss gave Bellevue fifth place in the tourney. Calvin Dennis led Bellevue with 10 points but also had 14 rebounds for the night. The Bulldogs were efficient in shooting inside (39%) and from the free throw line (75%), but could not find any momentum from long distance range, making only 3 of 16 attempts from three-point territory.

Bellevue’s next game is this Saturday, Dec. 5 in the Lower Columbia Tourney. The ‘dogs will open up at 6 p.m. vs. Chemeketa.
