After a series of schedule adjustments, the Bellevue College women’s basketball team won and lost one game over the weekend at Lower Columbia College, losing 75-53 to host Lower Columbia on Friday December 16 before bouncing back for a 53-48 win on Saturday December 17 against Portland CC. The games were initially supposed to be part of a four-team NWAC Crossover Tourney at Portland CC. Due to icy roads following a snow storm in the Portland area, the campus gym was forced to close, cancelling the tourney. With one team (Walla Walla) staying home, the other three opted to play a round-robin format at Lower Columbia.

On Friday, Bellevue trailed early, down 25-14 in the first quarter and never recovered. Lower Columbia outshot and outrebounded Bellevue and capitalized on 22 Bellevue turnovers (Lower Columbia had only 10). The Red Devils were also hot from three-point territory, outscoring Bellevue 24-9 from long range. Brenda Akoto, who was last week’s Under Armour NWAC Player of the Week, led Bellevue with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Fellow freshman Molly Dixon chipped in 13 points.

In Saturday’s win, Bellevue rallied from behind in the final quarter outscoring the Panthers 17-11 for the 5-point win. The low-scoring affair featured shooting as ice cold as the weather outside, as both teams shot in the 20% range. Bellevue was only 17-of-73 from the field, and 0-for-17 from three-point range. Erin Hamilton led BC with 15 points, and cashed in at the free throw line sinking 7-of-10.

Bellevue is now 6-3 overall and has some time off for the holidays before a December 28 matchup vs. Grays Harbor College at 3:00 p.m. at the Skagit Valley Tourney in Mount Vernon, WA.
