The Bellevue Community College men’s basketball program has taken up defending their 2006 NWAACC North Division title in earnest by signing a stellar local recruiting class. With 2006 North Division MVP Bryce Daub gone, along with fellow NWAACC North Division First Team Josh Lostlen, the Bulldogs have some pressing needs to address. Fortunately, a diverse and talented group of incoming players should provide Bellevue the opportunity to compete for its third straight division title, and hopefully take the program to the next level.
The task of replacing Daub’s production in the post is a tall order, but three incoming freshmen should provide an immediate solution. One “big” part will be 6’8”, 295 pound Nate Shekeryk of Inglemoor High School. A true center with great hands and a soft touch, Nate will give the Bulldogs a massive presence on the block. Playing for Coach Greg Lowell at Inglemoor last year, Nate averaged 10.7 points per game on a team that finished 23-4 overall, and took 8th place at the 4A State Tournament. Nate was also named to the All-Kingco 4A second team.
6’6” forward Josh Monagle of South Kitsap High School will add another physical body up front. With a crafty post game, Josh averaged better than 14 points and 8 rebounds per game last year for the Wolves, who compiled a 27-2 record, and advanced to the 4A State Semifinals.
Another state qualifier, 6’4” forward Sean Carter joins the Bulldogs out of Cascade High School in Everett were he played for Coach Kevin Rohrich. A gifted athlete and a tremendous rebounder, Sean helped lead Cascade to the Wesco 4A Championship, and an appearance in the 4A State Tournament He was also named to the Wesco 4A North Second Team.
Lostlen’s leadership and poise at point guard will be missed, but a trio of incoming guards will bring a fresh energy to the perimeter. Toussaint Tyler, of Kentwood, a versatile 6’2” guard provides a high degree of athleticism and speed to the Bulldog backcourt. As a senior, Toussaint averaged 16.7 points per game, and he will give the Bulldogs a player who can change the game with his ability to run the floor, attack the rim, and shoot from the perimeter. Toussaint was a part of the Kentwood team that finished runner-up in the state championship game in 2005, and he was in was named to the SPSL North First Team in 2006.
Another deep threat for Bellevue next season will be Lake Washington High School product Steve Wiseley. A prolific scorer for Coach Terry Johnson’s Kangaroos, Wiseley led the Kingco 4A in scoring at 23.3 points per game while shooting 45 percent from the 3-point line and 88 percent from the free throw line. A tremendous shooter with a quick release and great ball skills, Steve will immediately provide scoring and leadership from the guard position.
Sophomore transfer Luke Hammond is another highly talented player who will provide much needed experience on the perimeter. A 2005 graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School, Luke played at The Evergreen State College in Olympia during the 2005-2006 season. He is a well rounded offensive player with a knack for playmaking and should help give the Bulldogs a formidable backcourt.
Head Coach Jeremy Eggers and his staff are excited about the possibilities for the 2006-2007 Bulldogs team. The new recruiting class will join a strong group of returning players, headed up by 2005-2006 starters Paul Brockman (Snohomish HS, ’04) and Jordan Ard (Prairie HS, ’05). With a solid blend of incoming talent and returning experience, the future looks bright for Bellevue Community College men’s basketball.
