After securing their fourth league win of the season, the BCC Volleyball team rode a 4-1 record to the championship own crossover tournament last weekend to put the finishing touches on a 5-1 week.
On Wednesday, October 3 the team traveled north to take on Northern Region rival Edmonds Community College. In a spirited battle that stretched a full five games. Edmonds took the first game by a score of 28-30, but the Bulldogs stormed back to win the second 30-16. The momentum swung to the Tritons once more as they claimed a 22-30 victory, but BCC was able to even things up again with a 30-26 win in the fourth game to force and dramatic fifth. The final game was an out and out battle, but when the dust settled the visiting Bulldogs came away with a 17-15 win.
Bellevue’s attack was balanced, as Kasey Blevins (FR, Ferris HS) and Nicole Ljutic (SO, West Valley HS, Yakima) each recorded 11 kills, while freshman setter Sharon Kelley (Kentwood HS) notched 25 assists. Amanda Crank (SO, Issaquah HS) led the team in digs with 16, while Blevins and Ljutic contributed 12 and 11 digs respectively.
The Bulldogs hosted the Northern Region Crossover Tournament— featuring schools from all four regions of the NWAACC— on October 5th and 6th. With wins over Wenatchee Valley College (30-14, 30-23) and second ranked Mt. Hood Community College (27-30, 32-30, 19-17), the Bulldogs finished the first day undefeated. A 21-30, 27-30 defeat to Clark College on Saturday morning threatened Bellevue’s hopes, but the team pulled themselves together to record consecutive victories over Umpqua Community College (30-16, 30-12) and Yakima Valley Community College (30-24, 30-21) to claim the tournament championship.
The BCC women returned to league play on Wednesday, October 10 with a visit to Northern Region leader Whatcom Community College. The Bulldogs took the Orcas to the brink, but came up just short, dropping the match in five games by a score of 30-24, 22-30, 30-25, 17-30, 13-15. Ljutic led both teams with 20 kills and also recorded 14 digs and 7 blocks in the losing effort. The loss drops Bellevue to 4-2 in Northern Region play, and third place behind Whatcom and Skagit Valley College.
The next contest for Bellevue will be a home match against Olympic College on Friday, October 12. Should the Bulldogs win, they will have a chance to catch or pass Skagit Valley on Wednesday, October 17th, when the Cardinals come to visit for a 7:00pm match.
