Bulldogs Fall in Third Round of NWAACC Tournament

The BCC Volleyball team claimed an early victory at the 2007 NWAACC Tournament, but was unable to stay alive, losing consecutive matches in the second and third rounds to bring their season to a close.

The Bulldogs’ first round opponent was Chemeketa Community College. After the Storm jumped out to an early lead with a win in the first game, the Bulldogs seemed to seize control, winning the next two games and gaining a 21-10 advantage in the fourth game. Unwilling to go quietly, the Chemeketa rallied for a dramatic victory to set the stage for a decisive fifth game. The Bulldogs showed resiliency in the final game, outlasting the Storm and claiming the victory (23-30, 30-26, 30-28, 27-30, 15-11). Sophomore co-captain Nicole Ljutic led the BCC attack with 21 kills and also recorded 11 digs, while freshman Sharon Kelley dished out 52 assists. Jessica Dubois also had a strong outing with 14 kills and a team-high 22 digs.

Next up, BCC took on top ranked Columbia Basin College. After dropping the first two games, the Bulldogs rallied to win the third game. Although BCC threatened to force a fifth and decisive game, CBC put a quick stop to the Bulldog rally, taking home the victory in four games (30-25, 30-18, 27-30, 30-23).

In what would turn out the be the season finale for BCC, the Bulldogs dropped a close game against Clackamas in two sets (30-25, 30-22). Individual statistics for the final two games are not yet available.

The Bulldogs finished with a regular season record of 13-4 that included a victory over top seeded Whatcom and earned them a trip to the NWAACC Tournament. Ljutic enjoyed a strong sophomore campaign, recording 155 kills, leading the team in blocks with 13, finishing second in assists with 49, second in digs with 122, and also finishing second in Service Aces with 37. DuBois finished second on the team in kills with 150 while leading the team in Service Aces with 50. Kelley led the team in assists with a whopping 492. Sophomore co-captain Amanda Crank, honored as the NWAACC Defensive Player of the Week early in the season, led the team in digs with 258.
