Baseball Splits League Opener Series Against Douglas

The Bulldog baseball team split the season opening series losing 8-3 before winning the nightcap 7-1 on Saturday in Canada. The teams came to Bellevue the following day and split a doubleheader again by scores of 3-0 and 13-8. Bryan Barnes had four hits on Saturday while Michael Robertson had three in the second game. Kirk Wetmore turned in another brilliant performance on the mound, striking out nine in a three-hitter through nearly eight innings of work. He is now 2-0 on the year. On Sunday, Brian Buckham struck out seven and walked none in the first complete game of the year by a Bellevue pitcher. He threw only 90 pitches in the game and has now strung together 12 straight scoreless innings. Lucas Shaw homered in both games on Sunday, including an opposite field 390 foot solo shot in game one and a three-run homer in game two that cleared the left field fence, scoreboard, trees, and fence line of the residence behind left field. The weekend also marked the season debut of Mike Stone. The offensive juggernaut from the ’07 NWAACC Champion squad collected six hits over the weekend including a home run and leads the team with a .500 average. The Bulldogs host arch-rival and defending NWAACC Champion Edmonds on Saturday at 1:00 PM
