Baseball Split With Skagit Ensures Playoff Spot This Weekend

Bellevue College’s baseball team came out on Saturday and played championship-caliber baseball by defeating top-ranked Skagit Valley by scores of 10-3 and 10-4. The wins, coupled with two losses by Douglas College on the same day, assured Bellevue a spot in the top regional playoff tourney which will be hosted by Skagit Valley beginning on Friday. Brian Buckham threw 6 innings and struck out 7 while allowing only 4 hits on Saturday afternoon as Bellevue cruised to a 10-4 win. Cody Edwards and Lucas Shaw had 3 RBI’s apiece to lead the Bulldogs over Skagit ace, Braden Tullis, who entered the game with a perfect 8-0 record and 0.32 earned run average. In game two, the hot hitting continued for Bellevue as the Bulldogs pounded out 16 hits. Edwards again delivered with three hits while Ryan Shelton had 3 RBI’s. Ronnie Johnson came in and pitched five shutout innings to earn the win. On Sunday, TJ Parthemer equaled the stellar outings of Bellevue’s Saturday pitchers by tossing a three-hit complete game with 7 strikeouts. The Bulldogs could not deliver any key hits and ended up on the short end, losing 3-0. In game two, Skagit’s Brady Locker, cousin of University of Washington quarterback, Jake, delivered the big blow; a grand slam home run to take away Bellevue’s early 1-0 lead in the fifth inning to lead Skagit over Bellevue. The Bulldogs finished in fourth place in the North Region and will play top-seeded Skagit again this Friday in round one of the North Region Tourney. Edmonds and Everett, the second and third place teams respectively, will square off in Friday’s other opening round game of the double-elimination tourney that ends on Sunday. As the league champion, Skagit has assured a berth in the NWAACC Championships the following weekend, but will play for seeding in this weekend’s region tourney.
