After coming off a hot 4-0 start last weekend, the Bellevue College baseball team had no luck this weekend, losing two games to top-ranked Lower Columbia. In game one, Bellevue held a 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning before a Lower Columbia home run sent it into extra innings, eventually winning in the 11th by a score of 2-1. In game two, Bellevue mounted a rally by loading the bases in the ninth inning before falling 3-0.
In game one, Bellevue finally struck first to break a 0-0 tie in the 6th inning as starting pitcher Ian Parmley walked and scored on an Ian McKay single. Parmley, Kyle Swannack, and Seafth Howe were stellar on the mound, shutting out the Red Devils until the final out was needed to seal the win. Lower Columbia hitter Chris Pierce hit a 310 foot home run off of Howe over a shorter, temporary fence that was erected this past week due to construction on the field. Bellevue had an opportunity in the 10th with Zach Aaker and Parmley on second and third with two outs. However, a line drive by McKay was caught to end the inning. In the 11th, a single, two walks, an error, and a balk allowed Lower Columbia to squeak across the game-winning run. Swannack was dominating in middle relief, fanning 6 in four innings of shutout relief without giving up a hit. Dan Schmidt had three hits while McKay had two.
In game two, Bellevue spotted Lower Columbia a 3-0 lead before catching fire in the ninth. The Bulldogs loaded the bases and used every player on the bench to mount a threat but could not squeeze the runs across. Parmley had two hits to lead Bellevue. The fourth-ranked Bulldogs’ tough competition doesn’t get any easier, as they travel to number two-ranked Mount Hood after playing tough road doubleheaders against Green River and Lower Columbia. Later in the month, Bellevue will play at number three-ranked Columbia Basin, who lost last year’s title game to the Bulldogs. “Both Mt. Hood and Columbia Basin will be seeking revenge from last year’s tournament. Coupling that with the fact that we play the numbers one, two, and three-ranked teams all on the road makes this one of the toughest pre-season schedules for anyone in the NWAACC. We will definitely learn how to battle up against tough competition this month; we’re doing well so far,” says Head Coach Mark Yoshino.
