Bellevue College baseball won 3 out of 4 games in a weekend matchup against Tacoma and Pierce College. On Saturday March 20, the Bulldogs hosted Tacoma; their first meeting since 2005. Tacoma won a pitching duel in game one 1-0 while Bellevue won the nightcap 7-5. In the first game, pitchers Ian Parmley for Bellevue and Colton Brown of Tacoma dominated their foes through 7 innings. Tacoma finally broke the scoreless game in the 8th off reliever Cody Edwards. Down 1-0, the Bulldogs mounted threats with bases loaded in the 8th and two runners on in the 9th but could not generate a run. The Bulldogs stranded 10 runners on base. In game two, Tacoma appeared to take the early momentum from game one, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Bellevue answered back with 4 runs in the 3rd. Kyle Johnson and Edwards had consecutive RBI hits in the 4-run 5-hit inning. Johnson again delivered an RBI single in the 5th, as Bellevue added insurance runs that preserved the win. Kyle Long, who shutout Columbia Basin College to win the NWAACC title last May, has yet to give up an earned run this year as well. His 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief sealed the win. Long is now 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA this year and has a streak of 27 consecutive innings dating back to last season without giving up an earned run.
On Sunday March 21, Bellevue’s bats came alive sweeping Pierce College 14-7 and 12-4. The Bulldogs had 28 hits on the day and were led by Cory Urquhart who had three RBI’s. Parmley, Ian McKay, and Tyler Cox had 2 hits apiece. Jake Collier, coming off a rough outing a week ago against Mount Hood, was dominating on the mound, fanning 8 Pierce hitters in 5 innings of work. Ronnie Johnson earned the save by pitching extended relief, closing out the game throwing the final 3 2/3 innings. In game two, Bellevue had two big innings to secure the sweep, putting up 5 runs in the 6th and another 4 in the 8th. McKay continued his hot hitting with 2 doubles, 3 hits, and 3 RBI’s. He hit .474 over the weekend to lead Bellevue. Kyle Swannack tossed a one-hitter striking out 7 in his six innings of shutout work. Swannack’s bid for no-hitter was erased when a ground ball by Pierce’s Andrew Sewell was deflected off the glove of third baseman Will Mnice’s glove for an infield hit.
The Bulldogs take a 10-6 record into their final pre-season series this weekend with a doubleheader in Walla Walla on Friday. The team will travel 4 ½ hours on Friday before playing a doubleheader at 4PM (vs. Blue Mountain) and 7PM (vs. host Walla Walla). The series continues the following morning with two games in Pasco; an 11AM re-match at Columbia Basin, last year’s NWAACC Championship opponent, and a 2PM game vs. Spokane, which the team will have to drive immediately to following their game vs. CBC. The 2PM game vs. Spokane is being played at a neutral site, Tri-City Stadium.
