Baseball Splits Four Game Set in Eastern Washington

Bellevue College baseball won two games on Friday in the East Region Invitational before losing two on Saturday. The split leaves the Bulldogs at a 12-8 mark heading into league play this weekend. On Friday, Bellevue defeated Blue Mountain (OR) by a score of 14-7. Bellevue’s 6-run 8th inning put the game away after Blue Mountain gradually chipped away at Bellevue’s early lead. Cory Urquhart, Cody Edwards, Tyler Cox, and Zach Aaker all had RBI hits in the inning. Edwards had 4 RBI’s while Cox had 3 to lead the Bulldogs. Freshman left-hander Tyler Manke was brilliant in relief allowing no hits in three innings of relief and was followed by Jake Collier who threw the final two innings of shutout relief. In game two, Bellevue’s 10-4 win over Walla Walla was overshadowed by the loss of yet another player due to injury during pre-season. The Bulldogs’ hottest hitter, outfielder Ian McKay was injured on a play at second base. It was the third trip to the emergency room by a Bellevue player this year. Urquhart continued his hot hitting going 3-for-3 while Cox had a bases-loaded 3-RBI triple.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs faced Columbia Basin in a rematch of last year’s NWAACC Championship game. Saturday’s contest was another low scoring pitching battle as was last May’s finale. Columbia Basin delivered the key hits to defeat Bellevue 2-1. Kyle Swannack scattered 8 hits and struck out 5 in 6 innings of work. Kyle Johnson and Dan Schmidt each had 2 hits. Following the loss, the Bulldogs had to play their fourth game in a 24-hour span at a separate site. After traveling down the road to Gesa Stadium, Bellevue spotted Spokane an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before putting up 4 runs to take a 4-2 lead. Spokane battled back with a 3-run fourth inning all with two outs to take the lead for good. Ian Parmley was 3-for-5 for Bellevue.

This Saturday, Bellevue will open up league play this Saturday against Olympic College. The doubleheader is slated for a 1PM start at Legion Field in downtown Bremerton. Bellevue will host Olympic on Easter Sunday for another 1PM doubleheader to complete the 4-game series. Any updates due to weather will be posted.
