Bulldogs Split Series With Everett

Bellevue College’s baseball team followed up their series split from last week with another one; this time with league-rival Everett. Bellevue lost the opener at home on Saturday April 24 9-6 before winning the nightcap in a marathon contest 17-10. Bellevue held a 4-1 lead in game one before squandering it with defensive miscues and timely hits by Everett. Garrett Patterson, who has been sidelined for six weeks with an ankle injury, got his first hit of the season as a Bulldog and went 2-for-2. In game two, Bellevue’s bullpen pitching appeared to have let another one slip away, giving up a 7-2 lead by yielding seven Everett runs in the top of the sixth inning. Bellevue’s bats responded this time, scoring ten runs in the seventh and eighth innings to win 17-10. Blake Fulghum was the winning pitcher, allowing only three hits while striking out five in two innings of relief. Nick Smith and Cory Urquhart had seven of the team’s RBI’s while Tyler Cox went 3-for-6. On Sunday April 25, Bellevue and Everett battled back and forth which saw Bellevue jump out 1-0 in the first inning, give up the lead 4-1, then tie the game 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning. Tyler Cox singled home Ian Parmley to tie the game. Bellevue had two runners aboard after tying it up but left them stranded after a double play. In the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Everett had runners on second and third with one out. After an intentional walk to load the bases and to set up a potential double play, game two starter Seafth Howe entered the game and responded with a strikeout. However, with two outs, Howe walked the following hitter on a marginal pitch which forced in the winning run. In game two, Howe shook off the adversity of game one and a complete-game nine-inning win, 6-1. Howe took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before finally surrendering just two hits in the game without walking a batter. Howe’s stellar outing was also highlighted by throwing 25 fewer pitches than what is considered normal for a 9-inning game. Cox and Urquhart continued their hot hitting with two hits apiece. Bellevue is now 11-5 in league and 23-13 overall. In the tightly contested North Region, Bellevue hosts Skagit Valley, who is currently in fourth place at 7-5, this Saturday at 1:00 PM.
