Bulldogs Volleyball Wins First League Game of Season

This past week, the Bellevue College volleyball team traveled to Edmonds Community College and played a very close match but ultimately fell short 3-2 on September 29th. For the Bulldogs, Lisa Schouten had a team high 13 kills while Brandy Johnson recorded ten. Setter Veronica Wetzel set up the Bulldogs’ hitters and recorded all of the team’s assists with 38 throughout the match. As the match went the distance, eight Bulldogs players played in all five games.

On defense, Johnson also recorded four solo blocks as Desiree Diego contributed two digs.

Overall, the Tritons took the first two games of the match 28-26. Bellevue came back in games three and four 25-17 and 26-24. In a decisive game five, Edmonds came out on top 16-14, thus giving them the victory.

In the second match of the week, the Bulldogs had a much better result, winning against Olympic College on Friday October 1st. As the Bulldogs hit the road again, they set to reverse their recent trend of losing. It was a strong offensive output as four players recorded double digits in the kills category. Schouten led the team once again with 17. Others contributing were Johnson (13), Janessa Reid and Alexa Lagazo; both with 12 kills. Wetzel continued her solid contributions by recording 41 assists.

Not only was the match a strong offensive showing, strong defense was played as well. Diego had a team high 21 digs. Schouten also chipped in with 13 digs of her own. All 11 players for the Bulldogs recorded at least one dig. A total of six solo blocks were recorded for BC.

In the end, the Rangers were not able to put the Bulldogs away. The squads split the first two games with Olympic taking the first game 25-19 and Bellevue winning the second 25-21. Game three went to Olympic 25-22 putting Bellevue down 2 games to 1. Bellevue then rallied to win game four and five 25-13 and 15-9 to gain a victory. The Bulldogs’ record in league play is 1-2 which puts them in 5th place in the North Division of the NWAACC. Upcoming matches are against Skagit Valley on October 6th and Everett on October 8th. Both will take place in Bellevue at 7PM.
