Bulldogs Remain Undefeated in North Region Play; Improve to 21-1 on the Season

The Bulldog softball team swept a pair of North Region doubleheaders this week, taking two games from both Olympic College and Skagit Valley College.

On Wednesday, April 20, the Bulldogs traveled to Bremerton to meet Olympic for a make-up of a game originally postponed due to rain. The change in dates did not effect the Bulldogs as they won both their games beating Olympic 16-0 and 14-1. In game one, Breonna Chrisman threw a two-hit shutout and the Bulldogs pounded out 16 hits en route to the win. Offensively, Bellevue was led by multi-hit games from Tobey Varney (2-4, HR and 7 RBIs), Rogin Hardy (3-5, 1 RBI), Kristen Allen (3-4, HR and 3 RBIs), Haylee Baker (2-3, 2 RBIs) and Nicole Rogers (2-3).

In game two, the bats stayed alive as the Bulldogs had 14 more runs on 16 hits. Rogers had a dominating performance at the plate, hitting home runs in three straight at bats before being walked in her fourth appearance; she finished the game 3-3 with three home runs, one walk and eight RBIs. Varney added two more homeruns in the game and Haylee Baker, Emily Squiers and Breanna Wilson all had multiple hits in the game. After a rocky first inning, where she surrendered one run on three hits, Danielle Orvella settled in to shutout Olympic over the next four innings, giving up just one hit the rest of the way to pick up the victory.

On Saturday, April 23, the Bulldogs’ winning streak continued as they beat Skagit Valley by a score of 9-0 in both games. In game one, the Bulldogs had strong pitching efforts from both Chrisman and Hardy. Each pitcher struck out three batters en route to the shut-out effort. The Bulldogs had 14 hits in the game and were led offensively by Allen (3-4, 2 RBIs), Squiers (2-3, 1 RBI) and Rachel Tingley (3-3, 2 runs scored). Varney added a home-run in the winning effort.

Game two was a mirror image of game number one as the Bulldogs amassed 14 hits and 9 runs in another 9-0 victory. Orvella dominated on the mound giving up just two hits over four innings, while striking out nine. Hardy pitched the last inning, striking out three. Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Varney (2-3, 2 runs scored), Hardy (3-4, 2 RBI’s), Baker (2-4), Squiers (2-3), and Nellie Root (2-3, HR, 3 RBIs).

The unpredictable (except for ongoing rain) spring weather has done a number on the Bellevue softball schedule, but if the weather cooperates, Bellevue softball could be hopping this week. The Bulldogs host Edmonds on Tuesday, April 26, at 2 p.m.; then Bellevue takes the first of two road trips: traveling to Everett for a doubleheader Friday, April 29, 2 p.m. game time; followed by another road trip for a doubleheader against Shoreline on Sunday, May 1, game time 1 p.m.
