Bellevue College men’s soccer took a 6-0 win against Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) at Starfire Complex on Tuesday, August 28 playing in the NWAACC Friendlies. “It was great to see them putting things together,” said Bellevue’s head coach Tao Shen. “We were able to completely dominate the game for 90 minutes. Conceding only one shot during the whole game is very gratifying and shows how hard the team has been working at practices.” This is the second victory of the year for the Bulldogs, after a 3-1 win over Northwest University on Saturday, August 25.
BC sophomore Yahir Sandoval opened the score right in the beginning of the SWOCC game, followed by a successful free kick taken by sophomore Preston Hale. Not long after, Sandoval scored two more goals and freshman Sammy Gonzales scored the fifth goal of the game right before half time. SWOCC improved their defensive game in the second half and allowed the Bulldogs only one more goal, scored by freshman Conner Hall, which sealed the final result.
“We worked hard maintaining possession at all times without forcing the passes,” said Sandoval. “I feel that we were not rushed to score and the goals came when they needed to come.”
The first loss of the season came the next day, August 29, as the Bulldogs were defeated 4-3 by Skagit Valley College in a physical and hard-fought match on both sides. By half time, the Bulldogs were down 3-1 and not showing the same character from the previous two games. However, the second period was another story. Sandoval, who scored the first goal in the first half, scored two more to tie the game up 3-3 in the 70th minute. For a brief time, it seemed the Bulldogs might be able to comeback from the deficit, but Skagit Valley scored their fourth goal in the 80th minute taking advantage of the only scoring opportunity they had in the second half.
“Even though we ended up losing, there are many positive things we can take away from this game,” said Shen. “Getting back into the game by scoring two goals after having played so bad in the first half is a demonstration that this team has a lot of character and that we never gave up.”

Bellevue men’s soccer travels to Ontario, Oregon, to face Treasure Valley CC in an away game at noon on Saturday, September 8.
