BC SPLITS TWO ON THE ROAD

Bellevue College Bulldogs men’s basketball continued North Region play last week with two difficult road games against high-scoring teams. Bellevue first travelled to Shoreline Community College on Wednesday, Jan. 9, to take on the Dolphins. Shoreline averages 101.5 points per game leading the entire NWAACC by more than eight points per game. Bellevue succeeded in slowing down the Dolphins, holding them to six points below their season average and just 37% shooting from the field. Bellevue recorded their highest point total on the year as they pulled out a 104-95 victory. Sophomore Marcus Tibbs led the Bulldogs with 28 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Bellevue’s Alec Wilson hit four three point shots on his way to 21 points and four rebounds. Andrew Squiers and AJ Holloway each scored 13 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs.

On Saturday, Jan. 12, the Bulldogs took on the
Trojans of Everett Community College. Both teams came into the game with undefeated records in region play. Everett had not beat Bellevue since the 2008-2009 season. However, Everett is much improved this year coming into the game fourth in the NWAACC in scoring. Bellevue shot 52% in the first half while holding Everett to just 35% shooting, however the Bulldogs were able to manage only a four-point lead going into the second half. The second half turned ugly as one player was ejected and two players received technical fouls in the second stanza of play. Bellevue continued shooting the ball well and finished the game shooting an impressive 52% from the field. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs let up defensively in the second half and gave up 60 points, including 18 second-chance points. This second half defensive effort combined with 15 missed free throws and 22 turnovers led to the Bulldogs demise. Bellevue left Everett with a disappointing 96-89 loss.

Bulldog freshman Daniel Greer was a bright spot in the Everett game, recapturing his early season form scoring 22 points and grabbing five rebounds. Squiers scored 21 points and had six rebounds to go along with four assists. Wilson continued his three-game streak of four three-pointers per game on his way to 17 points. Sophomore Tyler Stracener led the team with seven rebounds and added 11 points.

On Wednesday, Jan. 16, the Bulldogs (2-1, 10-5) host another undefeated team in North Region play, the Edmonds Community College Tritons, currently 3-0 league, 13-2 season. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. Bellevue closes the week with a road trip to North Region defending champs Whatcom Community College on Saturday, Jan. 19, game time 6:00 p.m.
