Women’s Basketball Takes 3rd at Everett Tournament

Hall action

The BC women’s basketball team traveled to Everett over three  days, November 22-24, to compete in the Everett Community College Tournament  and came away with a third place finish.   The Bulldogs finished 2-1 for the weekend,  including a statement victory on Friday  playing against the defending NWAACC Champions, Lane Community College Titans.

In a non-league game as the opener of the tournament, the  Bulldogs were able to build a 14-point lead by halftime and never looked back,  defeating Lane 72-58.  Four Bellevue  players scored in double figures,  led by  sophomore captain Airashay Rogers who tallied 22 points with six rebounds and  five steals.  With two minutes left, Lane  began fouling to try and cut into the lead, however, the Bulldogs stayed  resilient and calm under pressure making 14 of their 17 free throws. Helping to  secure the victory for the Bulldogs, Rogers completed 10 of 13 free throws, and  Bellevue sophomore Tayler Flemming netted eight of eight free throws, for a  total of 15 points on the night. Alexis Berrysmith contributed 12 points and  nine rebounds, while Hunter Hopkins had 11 points and six steals.

On Saturday, following the emotional win from Friday, the  Bulldogs lost their first game of the season to East division powerhouse  Columbia Basin, 63-51. The Bulldogs fell behind early and were down by 11 by  halftime, but came out strong in the second half going on a 15-4 run tying the  game at 40 points apiece. The CBC Hawks had a run of their own still left and  once again were able to build a lead and finish the game on 23-11 run.  The Bulldogs had some good looks at the  basket from well-executed set plays down the stretch to cut into the lead,  however, there seemed to be an invisible lid over the rim and Bellevue was  unable to capitalize on their open opportunities. Bellevue was led by sophomore  forward Jori Hall adding 11 points and eight rebounds, while fellow sophomore  Maddison Rankin added 10 points of her own.

On Sunday, November 24, the final day of the tournament,  Bellevue rallied to defeat the host Everett Trojans in their third game in as  many days to claim third place with a final score Bulldogs 74, Trojans 72.  In an up-and-down game, the Bulldogs held on  down the stretch, including a defensive stop to finish the game denying  Everett’s attempt to tie the game.   Bellevue’s Hall had a monster game leading the Bulldogs in the victory  with 23 points and 13 rebounds helping to set the tone for  the Bulldogs, especially in the second half.

The Bulldogs will be back in action in a week and a half when  they host the Bellevue Crossover Tournament December 6-8, with seven visiting  teams from throughout the NWAACC.
