Bellevue Women’s Basketball Lose Season Opener Against National Junior College North Idaho 83-65

Hopkins actionFirst year Head Coach Mel Stubblefield is 0-1 but has what appears to be an upper tier squad after competing well on the road against national junior college powerhouse North Idaho JC, losing 83-65 on Saturday November 22. North Idaho JC, although a member of the NWAC, is still allowing their basketball teams to compete in another affiliation, the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). Under NJCAA jurisdiction, the North Idaho basketball players are allowed to receive full scholarships and can recruit nationally, as compared to NWAC regulations which only allow regional recruiting and partial scholarships. Considering this difference, and it being the season opener on the road, Bellevue fared quite well, as they were down by six at halftime 37-31. Freshman Mikayla Jones led Bellevue with 22 points on9-of-16 shooting from the field. Returner Hunter Hopkins added 19. Shelby Kassuba had the best overall game for the ‘dogs by leading the team with 12 rebounds and 4 assists. She also added 9 points and led the team in free throw shooting percentage by netting 75% from the line.
