With freshman phenom Shelby Kassuba already fouled out, and three other starters playing with four fouls apiece, Bellevue College’s women’s basketball team let a halftime lead slip away as the host Whatcom Orcas won 80-73. The Orca women capitalized in the second half for the comeback at the free throw line sinking 88% of their opportunities off Bulldog fouls, making 14-of-16 at the free throw line. After exiting with a game-leading 14 rebounds, Kassuba was picked up by the shooting of Hunter Hopkins and Mikayla Jones. Hopkins netted a game-high 26 points and also had six rebounds while Jones added 18 points and had six assists for Bellevue. Bellevue now stands at 11-2 in league play and 20-8 overall. The teams hopes to snap a two-game losing streak this Sunday March 1 when the Bulldogs host Everett at 1PM. Even with a win, Bellevue must hope for a loss by Peninsula in order to share the league title. Regardless of finish, BC’s women have already clinched a spot in the NWAC Championships in Pasco next week.
