Bellevue College women’s basketball appears to be on their way to a stellar season after an impressive showing at their own Bulldog Classic this weekend. The team went 2-1 and took third. However, the team lost a nail-biter in overtime in the semi-final and blew out their other two opponents.

All other teams except Bellevue had started their season before this weekend; but the Bulldogs showed no nerves. On Friday December 4, Bellevue clubbed Canadian visitor Kwantlen 71-28. Mikayla Jones had 19 points and 5 steals while inside threat Shelby Kassuba had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman newcomer Erin Hamilton out of Woodinville HS scored 8 points and brought down 9 rebounds while fellow frosh Montana Hagstrom, a local product out of Sammamish HS down the street, had 10 points and had an amazing 10 steals in the game.

On Saturday, facing undefeated Umpqua Community College (OR), the semi-final battle appeared to possibly be a game between two of the most-talented clubs in the NWAC as Umpqua defeated Bellevue in a 99-96 shootout in overtime. Jones was on fire pouring in 36 points and led BC with 9 assists while Hamilton continued her presence inside with 10 boards. Hagstrom had 23 points and was 5 for 8 from three-point range.

Playing for third place on Sunday December 6 against local rival Highline College, Bellevue bounced back with another easy win 78-52. Jones again showed she will be one of the highlight films of the NWAC this year by scoring 22 points, 5 assists, and 7 steals. Kassuba had 17 points and 11 rebounds and 5 steals while Kape Cosmos, Bellevue’s third returning sophomore besides Jones and Kassuba, had 11 points and 6 rebounds.

With two of the top returning players in the NWAC in Jones and Kassuba, the ‘dogs showed this weekend they look to be one of the top in the NWAC.  Bellevue’s next action is Friday December 11 in the Pierce Tourney; which is loaded with top teams in the NWAC. The tourney features Bellevue and three perennial powerhouses in Peninsula, Clackamas, and Lane (OR). Wenatchee Valley is undefeated so far and is in the tournament as well.
