Bellevue College men’s basketball went back and forth with the surging Olympic Rangers but eventually fell 73-71 in their home league opener last night. After leading by one point at halftime, 42-41, the Bulldogs came out shooting 46% in the second half, but were matched by the Rangers as the Bulldogs could not pull away with the win.

Sophomore Brian Zehr led the squad with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate Yonathan Michael added 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting while Jack Walton added 12. Olympic rode the hot shooting of Brian Neal, who carried the club to the win with 30 points. Bellevue had trouble stopping the threat from the outside, as Neal drained 5-of-7 from three-point range in his 30 point effort.

The Bulldogs (0-2 league, 9-8 overall) lost to a hot Rangers squad, who have now won three in a row after a sluggish start. The close scores in Bellevue’s first two games is an early indication of the competitiveness and depth in the North Region.  Bellevue travels to Skagit Valley this Saturday January 16 for a 7:00 p.m. game.
