A pivotal second quarter helped propel the Bellevue College women’s basketball team to a 65-61 win over Peninsula College in Port Angeles last night. The win comes as not only a huge win for this season’s current league play, but also for school tradition as Peninsula has been a perennial contender for the NWAC title in the last few years.

Bellevue put up 21 points in the second quarter as Peninsula could only score 11 to give BC the halftime lead. The Bulldogs got major contributions from several players which enabled them to hold off the tough Peninsula squad in front of their home crowd. Seasoned veteran Erin Hamilton had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Dauneah Wheeler had her first start of the year and came up big with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She was 3-for-5 from three-point range also. Brenda Akoto and Molly Dixon both had 14 points. Dixon led the team dishing out 5 assists as well. Melinda Akoto chipped in 10 points and had 8 rebounds. The dominance underneath in rebounds helped Bellevue maintain the lead into the final minutes as Peninsula made a small rally to overcome 7 point deficit after three quarters of play.

The Bulldogs are now in a three-way tie for first place at 3-1 in league play (11-6 Overall). Bellevue will host Shoreline in their next game this Wednesday January 25th at 5:00 p.m.
