Home crowd favorite Skagit Valley women’s basketball stormed out in front 25-13 after the first quarter and never looked back racing out to a 38-25 halftime lead and held on for a 65-58 win last night.

Other than the first quarter, Bellevue played evenly with the Cardinals in every category but could not catch up as Skagit Valley capitalized on every opportunity with a BC turnover or by cashing in at the free throw line.

Brenda Akoto had 15 points and also led the ‘dogs with 10 rebounds. Freshman Molly Dixon had 14 points as she was 8-for-9 from the free throw line as well. Playing in less than half the game, freshman Aamira Turner made quick contributions from her time on the floor and had 12 points including a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range.

Bellevue’s loss was softened by a key upset in the North Region as Peninsula, who was tied with Bellevue for first place, also lost to Everett. With the defeat, Bellevue remains in first place, but not in a three-way tie with Peninsula and Skagit Valley at 7-2. BC is 15-7 overall and plays at Everett this Wednesday February 15 at 5:00 p.m.
