Baseball Takes Three of Four From Skagit Valley

Garrett Gants

Bellevue College split a doubleheader on Saturday May 4 in a pair of pitchers’ duels winning 5-3 and losing 3-1 before the bats erupted yesterday for 35 runs in a sweep by scores of 16-6 and 19-14.

On Saturday, pitching aces Baxter Halligan of Skagit Valley and BC’s Brock Hathaway kept both teams in it until Lukas Motta’s 2-run home run off the net in left field was the ultimate game-winner. Motta had two hits as did Dom Marinez, Nick Hovland, and Al Aurelio, who all had key RBI’s for the ‘dogs as well in game where the Bulldogs got clutch hitting from the middle innings onward. Jared Maxfield was brilliant out of the pen with 3 shutout innings for the save. Maxfield also came on in long relief in game two giving up only one run in 6 2/3 innings. For the day, Maxfield went 9 2/3 innings and gave up only 2 walks and 1 run. Unfortunately, the ‘dogs could not piece any hitting together against Skagit Valley’s Tyler Tan, who struck out 8 while keeping BC hitters in check in the 3-1 loss.

Yesterday, Garrett Gants and Riley Gill had big days at the plate as Gants went 3 for 3 in game one with a homer and 5 RBI’s to lead Bellevue. Gill went 3 for 3 with a home run as well and scored 3 runs in the 16-6 win that was shortened due to the run limit rule.

In the nightcap, the ‘dogs plated 19 runs on 25 hits led by Gants’ 4 for 5 outing, with 4RBI’s, 3 runs, 2 doubles, a triple, and a home run.
Gill hit for the cycle by going 4 for 5 with 3 RBI’s, 2 runs. Dac Archer had 4 hits and scored 3 runs while Kye Seitz hit a grand slam home run and had 3 runs in addition to the offensive outpour provided by Gill and Gants. Nick Hovland fanned 3 in 1 2/3 innings of relief for the first save of the year.

The Bulldogs are now 27-13 and 14-6 in league. They close out the regular season at home this Friday with a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader against Shoreline. The Bulldogs will then get a day off as their home field is being used on Saturday by Seattle University for a game before finishing off the regular season at noon on Mother’s Day May 12 against Shoreline at Meridian Park in north Seattle.
