Volleyball Takes Fifth at Home Tournament

Bellevue College women’s volleyball finished fifth in a loaded 12-team tourney that resembled the talent found at the NWAC Championships this weekend on their home court at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion.

After going 3-0 on Friday September 6, Bellevue fell in bracket play Saturday September 7 to Linn-Benton 2-1. Following the loss, the ‘dogs came back and defeated Walla Walla 2-1 and Columbia Basin in straight sets 2-0 before falling 2-1 to Lower Columbia; the squad that went on to win the tourney.

In the opening bracket matchup against Linn-Benton, the two teams traded lopsided 25-18 sets before the Roadrunners took the decisive third in a close 15-13 win. The Bulldogs were 5-for-12 up front while Linn-Benton had 10 kills in the third and decisive set. Freshman outside hitter Zaiah Luna-Calvin had 11 kills and only two errors while Kelsie Otter led the ‘dogs defensively with 12 digs.

In their bounceback win over Walla Walla, the Bulldogs took advantage of the Warriors’ .062 hit percentage in the third set as Savannah Sleasman had nine kills while Dyamonde Schirmer had four kills, 11 assists and added two service aces as well.

Bellevue is now 13-4 in pre-season play and will host South Puget Sound and Tacoma in a four-team round-robin matchup (Edmonds will also participate) this Tuesday September 10. Bellevue squares off with South Puget Sound at 3:00 before a 5:00 match vs. Tacoma. Edmonds will play the opposite opponents on the adjacent court at those times as well.
