Volleyball Splits With South Puget Sound and Tacoma

Bellevue College volleyball hosted three teams in a one-day round robin event today at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion. The Bulldogs won the opener over South Puget Sound 3-0 by scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-15. In the nightcap, the Bulldogs lost a tough one in five sets, 26-24, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, and 15-13 in the decisive fifth set.

In the win over South Puget Sound, Zaiah Luna-Calvin led the ‘dogs with 15 kills and also had two service aces. Freshman middle blocker Yaneli Garcia also four kills in addition to two block solos and assists apiece. Set two proved to be the toughest, as South Puget Sound had the lead at one point 18-17 on a service error. The ‘dogs fought back though, reeling off four straight points.

The battle with Tacoma was as competitive and even as it could get, with three sets that were decided within two points, including the final set. After taking the first two sets, the Bulldogs made 15 errors in sets three and four combined to let Tacoma back in it. In set five, the Titans held a one point lead much of the way until a service ace from Bellevue’s Lilandra Dexter gave the ‘dogs their first lead at 13-12. The Titans rallied back with three straight points to earn the win. Dexter was solid all-around for Bellevue with 16 kills and nine digs. Kelsie Otter had 11 digs for the ‘dogs.

Bellevue is 14-5 and will travel to Albany, OR for the Linn-Benton Crossover. Opening match for BC is Friday September 13 at 12:00 p.m. vs. Blue Mountain.
