Whatcom Wins Second Battle Over Bulldogs

Amanda Luckett

In a second meeting in just over a week, Bellevue College women’s basketball fell in round two of the dual for first place in the North Region, losing 85-80. In a game in which Whatcom held control by a small margin much of the way, the Bulldogs stayed within striking distance until the final buzzer as the heroics of Amanda Luckett, who had a highlight reel game of 29 points and 18 rebounds, was not enough for the ‘dogs.

The Orcas gave Bellevue no window of opportunity as they sank 22-of-25 free throws on the night while the ‘dogs made only 10-of-17 for 59% from the charity stripe.

After falling behind 19-16 after one quarter, the teams went on a power contest down under as Luckett and Whatcom’s Madison Chisman dueled each other in what seemed to be a 27-point second quarter for both teams. Both Luckett and Chisman led their respective squads in the quarter dominating the boards and points to send the teams into the locker room with a score of 46-43 Whatcoom.

The Orcas stretched the lead up to 10 late in the third quarter making the deficint even more difficult to overcome in the final quarter for Bellevue. With 2:09 remaining, Luckett took control with a put back to cut Whatcom’s lead to just one at 79-78. Luckett then took control on the defensive front with a blocked shot and rebound but the Bulldogs could not capitalize as Whatcom added back to their lead while Bellevue went 0-for-4 on their next possessions down court in the final minute to prevent any sort of heroic comeback.

The Bulldogs fall into a tie for second place at 7-3 (14-6 overall) in the North Region; two games behind Whatcom. The ‘dogs return home for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff against Shoreline this Saturday.
