Baseball Shows Depth in 9-0 Win

Bellevue College baseball, fresh off their opening-weekend split in Oregon, had their first mid-week non-conference game in three years today sailing to a 9-0 win over Green River at Hogan Park in Kent. The Bulldogs used 14 hitters and eight pitchers in the single game with the Bulldog pitchers fanning 13 on the day, including Connor Portugal who entered the ninth and struck out the side.

The highlight of the day was a monumental one; redshirt freshman Chaun Mitchell, who has waited four years to be able to return to baseball, made his college debut and hit an inside-the-park home run in his first ever college at bat. He then followed up with two singles going 3-for-3 in his first game since joining the club back in the fall of 2016.

Nick Hovland was a terror on the base paths and led the BC offense with three runs and three stolen bases while Dac Archer doubled and tripled. Ryan Hecker, who was nursing a back injury opening-weekend, made his debut today in his first start and got the scoreless trend going for the Bellevue arms, as the shutout was preserved by his fellow pitchers Warren Utschinski, Carter Sutton, Jacob Dahlstrom, James Meader, Brock Hathaway, Kosta Cooper, and Portugal.

The Bulldogs are 3-2 and will travel to Pierce for a four-game set at Mt. Tahoma HS in Tacoma on Saturday February 29 and Sunday March 1. Both doubleheaders will start at 11:00 a.m. as there are no lights at Mt. Tahoma. Originally scheduled as a home-and-home series, the ongoing Courter Field renovations have forced Bellevue to be the visiting team for the entire weekend.
