Softball Splits Doubleheader With SW Oregon

BC softball

Bellevue College softball continued their pre-season play this weekend with a doubleheader split with visiting SW Oregon. The Bulldogs won the opener 6-4 before falling in a wild 15-13 game in the nightcap. Originally scheduled as a four-team round-robin, a late cancellation turned the event into a traditional doubleheader.

In game one, the ‘dogs held a 2-1 lead going into the final inning before the Lakers erupted for three runs in the top of the seventh. An error and an intentional walk by BC’s battery backfired as the loaded bases allowed SW Oregon to score two more runs giving them a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the last inning. Bellevue responded in thrilling fashion with a triple by Tori McDowell to win it for the ‘dogs.

In the nightcap, with thunder and lightning and snow storms in surrounding areas, the hitter’s spree featured everything from lead changes to potential cancellations due to lightning, to a reversed call that took away a Bellevue home run. The Bulldogs scored in every inning and held an8-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth when lightning struck in the nearby hills. With the umpires deciding to not end the game early, the Lakers erupted with their own storm, putting up 12 runs in the final three innings to take the lead 15-12. In the bottom of the seventh, BC appeared to be in perfect position as Carissa McDowell belted a home run for the ‘dogs with only one out and down by a run. Instead, the umpires took away the home run due to a pre-mature celebration of the home run by McDowell’s teammates before she crossed home plate, which is illegal by NCAA rules. The ‘dogs now down by two with two outs, ended up on the short end, 15-13. While Bulldog pitchers gave up 7 walks and 16 hits, the Lakers’ arms in the circle didn’t fare any better, yielding 10 walks, a hit batter, and 15 hits. The long game was led by BC’s Elise Allen, who was 3-for-5. Leslie Main had a pinch-hit 2-RBI double. Others with multiple RBI’s were Megan Paoli, Natalie Zender, and Shayla Cole.

Bellevue is now 2-4 for the season. The Bulldogs open up play at the NWAC Inter-Region Tourney this Saturday at 11:15 a.m. vs. Spokane followed by a 1:30 matchup against Clark.
