Baseball Takes Three of Four Over Pierce

Brock Hathaway

Bellevue College baseball extended their win streak to six games before finally having it snapped this weekend, as the Bulldogs took three games of the four-game set at Pierce. On Saturday February 29, Bellevue won 4-2 and 10-5 to sweep the doubleheader. Down 2-1 in the opener, the offense got things going with no outs as Riley Gill walked, stole second base, and was followed by a single by Nick Hovland. A balk, an error, and two quality at bats by freshmen Pierce Leavengood and Fred Buckson helped plate three runs to give BC the lead. Sophomore lefty Connor Portugal dominated the Raiders in relief, giving up no hits and no runs in the final three innings of the game once Bellevue had the big inning to take over the lead. In the nightcap, Brock Hathaway fanned 7 while surrendering 0 walks in 4.1 innings of relief to pace Bellevue. The ‘dogs pounded out 15 hits, led by Ben Schulte’s two triples and Riley Parker’s home run. Much of the damage was late after the bats were stymied by Pierce’s starter Riley Paulino who struck out 8 Bulldogs in 4 innings of work.

On Sunday, again down 2-1 late in the game, the bats erupted for 10 runs in the middle innings and were led by the three hits apiece by Schulte and Dac Archer. Kyle Green hit his first home run of the year into the parking lot at Mt. Tahoma HS and had 2 RBI’s. In the nightcap, Bellevue’s offense could not pull out the heroic comeback as they did earlier in the series, falling 4-2. A throwing error on a pickoff allowed Pierce to take an early lead that Bellevue could not overcome.

Bellevue is now 6-3 on the year and will take on Tacoma this weekend. Saturday’s doubleheader will start at noon while Sunday’s twinbill will start an hour later at 1:00 p.m. due to daylight savings time kicking back in over Sunday morning.
