Baseball Splits Series With Everett In Showdown Between #2 and #3 Ranked Teams

After over a year’s wait, the #2 ranked (NWAC Pre-Season Poll) Bellevue College Bulldogs baseball team got a challenge right off the bat with a four-game set at #3 ranked Everett this past weekend. The two squads split on both days showing the competitiveness and talent between two of the top-ranked teams in the NWAC.

On Saturday, a pitcher’s duel ensued between Bellevue’s Trevin Hope and Everett’s Zach Boswell. Both went a solid six innings in their starts and exited with Everett leading 2-0. Pierce Leavengood homered in the top of the eighth before BC threatened again in the ninth as Kye Seitz led off the inning with a single that possibly could have been a double. Seitz scrambled back to first base to ensure a single but in the process dislocated his shoulder on the slide back. Pinch runner Troy Baunsgard entered and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and reached third on a fly out. With the tying runner 90 feet away the ‘dogs ended their threat on a ground out to end the game.

In game two, Nate Butcher put together BC’s second solid starting effort going six innings as well while allowing only three Trojan hits. Quincy Vassar made his college debut and went three scoreless innings to earn the save in an 8-3 win for BC. After releasing the opening game jitters, Bellevue’s bats broke loose as Austin McMinds, Ben Schulte, and Kyle Green all had two hits. McMinds popped out his first homer of the year for Bellevue.

On Sunday, both BC’s bats and starting pitcher Jacob Dahlstrom were on fire in a 17-3 win in the opener. Dahlstrom put on a clinic striking out 7 while walking nobody before exiting early after four innings due to a sizeable 12-1 lead. Schulte continued his hitting from the night before as he hit an opposite field home run to start things off in the first inning for Bellevue. Schulte had his second two-hit game in a row and was joined by Riley Parker (4 RBI’s) and Marques Titialii (3 runs) with two hits apiece. McMinds had three hits as well to continue his hot bat in the leadoff spot. Freshman Harrison Clark, who did not see action on the first day, promptly came in and made his college debut by belting the second pitch he saw off the wall in left field for a 2-RBI double to initiate his collegiate career.

In the nightcap, Bellevue found itself in a unique position they were never in for the first three games as they fell behind 2-1 in the first and then followed up by yielding multiple runs for the next three innings and were down 10-1 after four innings. Although BC’s pitching shut down the Trojans for the final four innings while plating six runs, even a bases-loaded threat in the ninth was not enough to overcome the large deficit as the ‘dogs fell 10-6 resulting in a series split.

Bellevue hosts rival Edmonds this Friday with a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m.
