Bulldogs Baseball Sweeps Skagit Valley

Bellevue College baseball took four games from Skagit Valley this week, winning 7-3 and 4-1 at home on Thursday before gutting out two closer wins at Skagit on Friday by scores of 6-5 and 7-4.

In Thursday’s wins, Pierce Leavengood belted his third homer of the year while Mack Mahovlich hit a home run as well as BC won the opener 7-3. In the nightcap, Bellevue jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and rode the arm of starting pitcher Nate Butcher, who struck out 11 Skagit hitters and only allowed 2 hits in six innings of work before giving way to Connor Portugal who threw three scoreless innings for the save.

On Friday, Bellevue had to hold off a ninth inning rally by Skagit to win the opener behind the gutsy pitching of Carter Sutton then came from behind to win the nightcap. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead and leading 6-1 in the eighth, Skagit rallied for four runs on three free passes and two errors to come within one with runners on first and second before Sutton fanned Varen Sabino to end the threat. Sutton went on to strike out two in a shutout ninth to seal the win. Nick Hovland homered and had 3 RBI’s while Jacob Dahlstrom was the second consecutive starter to toss a two-hitter for Bellevue in another dominant outing for the 6′ 7″ starter. In the finale, Cal Kirchoff fanned 10 and gave up only three hits in his starting debut before tiring in the sixth as Skagit scored three to take a 3-2 lead. BC would fight back with two runs in the seventh and another three in the eighth for the comeback win. The Bulldog bats led off both the seventh and eighth with back-to-back hits as Marques Titialii and Tyler Miller got things going with base hits to start both rallies.

Bellevue is now 9-3 and hosts Olympic College this weekend to round out the first half of league play on Friday April 30 at 4 p.m.
