In what was expected to be a see-saw battle between two of the top NWAC teams, host Whatcom and visiting Bellevue did not disappoint as the two teams traded wins in the firs four sets before the Bulldogs pulled away in set five, winning 17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 15-5.
Whatcom stormed out to a 9-2 lead in set one on three service aces. Without letting it become a blowout, BC rallied to 17-22 before three errors gave set one to the Orcas.
In sets two and three, Bellevue’s offense grew with 24 kills on only seven errors while Whatcom made the Bellevue wins easier with 14 errors.
With momentum appearing to swing towards Bellevue’s side, Whatcom staged a comeback of the ages in set four. Down 23-18, Whatcom ran off seven straight points to steal the win away from the Bulldogs.
Bellevue then fell behind early 5-6 before the momentum of the match changed in the hands of Bellevue’s Sydney Waite. The freshman from Columbia River HS came up huge with three service aces that sparked a five point swing giving Bellevue an 11-6 lead which the ‘dogs held onto for the match.
Bellevue is now 9-2 and tied with Edmonds for first place in the North Region with one game remaining, and appears to be in the driver’s seat for the region crown as Edmonds must play Whatcom on Friday while BC entertains Everett in the regular season finale at 7:00 p.m.
