Fourth Quarter Heroics Give Women’s Basketball First Win of Season

Fighting off yet another sluggish start to a game this season, this time the Bellevue College women’s basketball team rallied late and came up with a 56-45 win over Chemeketa (OR) at the Pirate Classic hosted by Peninsula College in Port Angeles.

The Bulldogs outscored Chemeketa 20-9 in the fourth quarter on lights out 6-for-8 shooting from the field and 8-for-12 from the free throw line. The defense was tenacious as McKayla Rodriguez had two key steals in the quarter as BC had five in the quarter. The defense also put pressure on Chemeketa’s offense, as the Storm could only covert a paltry 9% from the field on 1-for-11 shooting.

Fortunately, Bellevue was able to escape with a win after the first quarter appeared to be a repeat episode of what has plagued BC so far this year; cold shooting coming out of the gate. The ‘dogs made only 8% (1-for-12) in the quarter as Willow Jackson made the squad’s only shot in the quarter; a three-pointer which got Bellevue on the board after falling behind 11-0 to start the game.

Considering the dismal start, and the team’s past two games which ended up being losses after a rough first quarter, the win was not only BC’s first of the year but may end up being one of the club’s best comebacks.

Evelyn Ioane led BC with 18 points and also had seven rebounds. Bellevue had 12 steals in the game including four from Rodriguez. Brianna Byrnes also had a solid all-around performance with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

Bellevue is now 1-2 overall and will host Northwest Indian College this Thursday December 9 at 6:00 p.m. in the squad’s home opener.
