Women’s Soccer Falls In Final Minutes

In one of the most intense soccer matches of the year so far, Bellevue College women’s soccer fell 3-2 to visiting Whatcom today. Bellevue held a 2-0 lead deep into the game and unfortunately saw the lead disappear in a 12 minute span late in the second half as the Orcas scored twice in just over a minute around the 63 minute mark to tie the game.

The match got physical as the score got close as BC’s Lana McCurry and Whatcom’s Heleen Mott became involved in an altercation that led to red cards being issued to both players, in addition to a yellow card to BC’s Natalie Hawkins. The emotions were hot on both sides and Whatcom took advantage of the momentum from the previous goals to find the next just minutes after the penalties for a goal by Viktoria Melnyk on an assist by Kate Blair. The Orcas would hold onto the 3-2 win in an emotional match for both clubs.

BC got on the board early just five minutes into the match on a goal by Alaska native Jolie Widaman who was assisted by Vanessa Fleming. The ‘dogs then had their second goal by freshman Payton Pine early in the second half before Whatcom’s heroic comeback.

Bellevue suffered their first loss of the year and is now 3-1 (0-1 in North Region play). They will host Skagit Valley this Saturday in a night contest starting at 5:00 PM.
